Report: Emirates calls on GCC countries to depeg currencies from US dollar to curb inflation

A newspaper in the United Arab Emirates says the tiny Gulf state's government is lobbying neighboring countries to depeg their currencies from the U.S. dollar to curb inflation.

The National, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi ruling family, reported Sunday that the UAE is calling on all six Gulf Cooperation Council member states to "rethink" their monetary policy amid soaring inflation in the oil-rich region.

Financial market losses could top 1,600 billion dollars: report

The global financial crisis could lead to losses of 1,600 billion dollars for financial institutes, according a report in the Swiss Sunday newspaper SonntagsZeitung. It quoted a confidential study by the hedge fund Bridgewater Associates as saying losses for banks holding risky assets could be four times greater than the 400 billion dollars previously estimated.

Banks To Lose $1.6 Trillion

According to an article in Sonntags Zeitung, the banks are only a quarter of their way through announcing their losses.

$3 Trillion Stock Market Loss In June

S&P analysts pointed out today that over $3 trillion has been lost from global stock markets in June alone. To put that in perspective, that's 8.18% of the total value of 52 equity indices lost in a single month.

Australian Astronomical Society Warns of Global Cooling

A 2005 prediction of solar activity. The sunspot number should now stand close to 100, instead it is zero. "Spin-orbit coupling" to blame; effects could last decades.

A new paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia is warning of upcoming global cooling due to lessened solar activity. The study, written by three Australian researchers, has identified what is known as a "spin-orbit coupling" affecting the rotation rate of the sun. That rotation, in turn, is linked to the intensity of the solar cycle and climate changes here on Earth.

The study's lead author, Ian Wilson, explains further, "[The paper] supports the contention that the level of activity on the Sun will significantly diminish sometime in the next decade and remain low for about 20 - 30 years."

According to Wilson, the result is a strong, rapid pulse of global cooling, "On each occasion that the Sun has done this in the past the World’s mean temperature has dropped by ~ 1 - 2 C."

Snow in July?

With diesel smoke and white powder flying, heavy equipment operators worked furiously to remove enough snow to open the Going-to-the-Sun road, which connects the two sides of Glacier National Park and is usually open by the first week of June.

But huge amounts of snow still blanket the Northern Rockies high country, in part because of record snowfalls in Montana this year, so the opening will not take place until Wednesday, the latest on record by a day, except for World War II when the road was not plowed at all.

Secret report: biofuel caused food crisis

Biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75% - far more than previously estimated - according to a confidential World Bank report obtained by the Guardian.

The figure emphatically contradicts the US government's claims that plant-derived fuels contribute less than 3% to food-price rises. It will add to pressure on governments in Washington and across Europe, which have turned to plant-derived fuels to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and reduce their dependence on imported oil.

Senior development sources believe the report, completed in April, has not been published to avoid embarrassing President George Bush.

This report, which everyone in the US and the world should be reading, "...has not been published to avoid embarrassing President George Bush"?

These policies favoring biofuel production are causing people to die.

The World Bank should be less concerned with "embarrassing Bush" than they should be with telling the truth straight up, period, end of discussion.

Don't bomb Iran, Bush warns Israel

President Bush and the top U.S. military commander warned Israel Wednesday against bombing Iran, suggesting the U.S. doesn't want to get involved in a third war.

This is a very public distancing on the part of the US from the concept that the US has any responsibility for planning any kind of an attack on Iran.

However, the track record for Israel's actually listening to what the US wants, and following though, is pretty grim.

Most military analysts agree that Israel could well start this war, but would be completely unable to finish it: they just don't have the assets to do that.

Disquiet on the 'third front' between the US and Israel

"I know that your blood and your lives are at stake. Our blood and our lives are at stake in many places and may be in others. I think it is a necessity that Israel should never make itself seem responsible in the eyes of America and the world for making war. Israel will not be alone, unless it decides to go it alone."

So said Lyndon Baines Johnson in a dramatic Oval Office meeting with then-Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban, just ten days before the outbreak of the 1967 war.

Translation: The US will take the lead in attacking Israel's enemies so Israel can pretend that it is not starting the wars.

Hersh: Cheney 'Privately' Says He Prefers U.S. -- Not Israel -- Strike Iran Because 'We'll Get Blamed Anyway'

HERSH: If Israel goes -- I'll tell you what Cheney's says privately, and whether or not you, how I know this is, -- what he says privately is, "we can't let Israel go because, first of all, they don't have the firepower, we do. We have much more firepower. And secondly, if they go, we'll be blamed anyway."

Asked by Mitchell if that meant Cheney wanted the U.S. involved, Hersh replied, "there you go." Watch it:

One has to wonder just how far Cheney is willing to go get his next war started.

And consummate sociopath that he is, he will never accept any blame or shame for what devastation his decisions may cost not only this country, but the world.

Israel reassures West: No Iran attack in 2008

Israeli leaders have sent messages to several Western countries that ruled out an attack on Teheran in 2008. Israel told the governments of Britain, France and the United States that the Jewish state would allow for yet another diplomatic effort to halt Iran's uranium enrichment program.

One has to wonder if Israel just blinked.

Iran has resumed A-bomb project, says West

Iran has resumed work on constructing highly sophisticated equipment that nuclear experts say is primarily used for building atomic weapons, according to the latest intelligence reports received by Western diplomats.

This is the article to which the Haaretz article, commented on this morning, alludes.

And "Con" Coughlin has a consistently dubious track record for lies, half-truths, and distortions in order to sell not only this war to the world, but the War against Iraq.

The bottom line is, the IAEA has been watching what Iran is doing, and have seen nothing indicating the resumption of a weapons program. Also, please note that there is absolutely no sourcing of this claim: it is simply reported as fact, and expected to be believed on faith without anything concrete to back it up..

Meanwhile, Syria is reporting that Israel is burying nuclear waste in the Golan Heights.

So maybe it's time for the world to find out just what Israel is doing that they have so much nuclear waste to get rid of.

Ahmadinejad: Israel and U.S. won't dare attack Iran

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday said his country would not stop enriching uranium, as demanded by the international community, and charged that Israel and the United States were too scared to attack.

If in fact this is what Ahmadinejad actually said (and who knows how "lost in translation" from Farsi into English via Haaretz, this statement could have been mangled), he's really made a colossal error in judgment by saying this.

It may sound good for local Islamic community consumption, but it will go over like the proverbial "lead balloon elsewhere.

And as to the statement that "Meanwhile, a British newspaper, quoting intelligence reports received by Western diplomats, reported Monday that Iran has resumed work aimed at producing a nuclear bomb.", please note that the information is never sourced.

It is simply stated as true (by the same writer who claimed Mohammed Atta was meeting with Iraq Intelligence and that Iran was "grooming" bin Laden's successor), and reported an article of faith, without anything concrete with which to back it up.

And please note that the same Wardrums intensifying, anyone?!?!?

US holds Navy exercise after Iran comments on Gulf

The U.S. Navy said on Monday it was carrying out an exercise in the Gulf, days after vowing that Iran will not be allowed to block the waterway which carries crude from the world's largest oil-exporting region.

"The aim of Exercise Stake Net is to practise the tactics and procedures of protecting maritime infrastructure such as gas and oil installations," Commodore Peter Hudson said in a U.S. Fifth Fleet statement.

Translation: let's see jjust how militarily provocative we can be against Iran right now!

One stupid, blitheringly idiotic miscalculation on either side, and we're off and running. into a military conflict, which seems to be just what some of the the knuckleheads in Tel Aviv and Washington want.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards hold war games: media

Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards began military maneuvers on Monday, news agencies said, the same day the U.S. Navy said it was carrying out an exercise in the Gulf.

The war games were conducted by missile units of the Guards' naval and air forces, the Fars and Mehr news agencies said. They said the exercises, which began a few hours ago, were aimed at improving combat readiness and capability.

Con Coughlin, more MI6 disinformation?

David Leigh wrote back in June 2000 in The Guardian that "Black propaganda - false material where the source is disguised - has been a tool of British intelligence agencies since the days of the second world war...readers of the Sunday Telegraph were regaled with with the dramatic story of the son of Libya's Colonel Gadafy and his alleged connection to a currency counterfeiting plan. The story was written by Con Coughlin, the paper's chief foreign correspondent and it was falsely attributed to a "British banking official". In fact, it had been given to him by officers of MI6, who, it transpired, had been supplying Coughlin with material for years." Annie Machon, David Shayler's partner, in her book 'Spies,Lies and Whistleblowers: MI5 and the David Shayler Affair' "alleges that MI6's counter-Iranian section used the Sunday Telegraph (and the journalists Con Coughlin, John Simpson and Dominic Lawson) to try to blame Iran for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, the destruction of flight PA103. MI6 was trying to deflect attention from the fact that it was actually a Libyan retaliation for the US bombing of Tripoli (backed by Thatcher) in 1986."

Syria tells UN: Israel burying nuclear waste in Golan Heights

Syria has complained to the United Nations about a series of alleged Israeli wrongdoings in the Golan Heights, including burying nuclear waste and discriminating against the region's Druze residents.

Oh? and just what is Israel doing that they have so much nuclear waste to bury??????????

'Egypt stopped mediating between Hamas and Fatah due to US-Israel veto'

Egypt has stopped mediating between Hamas and Fatah due to a US-Israel veto, the London-based A-Sharq al-Awasat reported Sunday, quoting a senior Palestinian source.

The last thing Israel and the US want to see is any kind of Fatah/Hamas unity.

The further apart these two Palestinian factions are, the more territory Israel thinks it will have the chance to grab while they're bickering with each other.

The Israelis Breach the Truce Again - Attacking Palestinian Fishing Boats in Palestinian Territorial Water

On Friday, Israelis in war ships launched two rockets targeting Palestinian fishermen on the shore line outside the Sudaniyya seaside area of the northern Gaza Strip,.The Israelis assaults continued on Saturday morning when Palestinian fishermen was targeted with machine guns damaging their boats, outside the shoreline of Tal As-Sultan, in the western parts of Rafah in southern Gaza Strip. These Israeli attacks inside Palestinian territorial waterlines is a direct violation of the truce, which went in to effect on June 19 between the Israeli occupant and the Palestinian homeland resistance.

The leaders of Israel are not interested in peace: it is only interested in gaining territory by any means they believe they can get away with.

MOHAMMED OMER; FROM TRIUMPH TO TORTURE

Maya Angelou once said... "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." Truer words were never spoken. Unfortunately, many events are being relived again..... but some are facing them with courage... Mohammed Omer is one of them.

SUMMARY OF EVENTS IN THE DETENTION, INTEROGATION & TORTURE OF PRIZE WINNING INTERNATIONAL JOURNALIST, AGE 24, GAZA NATIVE MOHAMMED OMER BY ISRAELI AUTHORITIES, JUNE 26-27, 2008.

Note: This is a compilation of his first hand account of the events of June 26 and June 27, 2008. On June 28th as this is being transcribed Omer is again in transit to a European hospital in Gaza due to chest pains and difficulty breathing as a result of the following.

Afghanistan Accuses "Foreign Intelligence Agency" Of Deadly Embassy Bombing

Afghanistan's interior ministry has accused a "foreign intelligence agency" of being behind today's deadly suicide bombing that ripped apart the country's Indian embassy in Kabul, killing 41 people. Could the event represent another "false flag" run by American intelligence as a means of maintaining a military presence in Afghanistan and control of the country's lucrative opium trade?

Afghans implicate Pakistan in embassy bombing

Remember a couple of weeks ago, when this site mentioned that the world can look for a further demonization of the Pakistani government until the US and NATO get what they want militarily from Pakistan?

Didn't take too long for this to happen, did it?!?

Al-Qaeda finds three safe havens for terror training

Al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden's terrorist organisation, driven out of Afghanistan and defeated in Iraq, is re-emerging in strength in three alternative safe havens for training, operational planning and recruiting - Pakistan, Somalia and Algeria - according to Western intelligence and defence sources.

You mean THESE "Al Qaeda" (nudge nudge wink wink)?

(Ahem)

It is baldly obvious where the propaganda is going here.

Pakistan is being demonized for not hitting their radicals hard enough to keep them from cross border attacks in Afghanistan.

The US and NATO are hoping to step up pressure on the Pakistani government to have a very strong Western military presence on Pakistani soil, something that they have heretofore refused, and something that would compromise any sense of being a sovereign government to the Pakistani people

And what do Somalia and Algeria have in common that this articlerefuses to mention?Oil, and natural gas.

In 2006, oil and natural gas exports made up 98% of Algerian exports.

And the West wants those resources...badly.

In an article by Carl Bloise out of "thirdworldtraveler.com", from www.zmag.org, January 16, 2007, the following facts were stated:

"Currently, the US gets about 10 percent of its oil from Africa, but, the Monitor story said but 'some experts say it may need to rely on the continent for as much as 25 percent by 2010.' Reportedly, nearly two-thirds of Somalia's oil fields were allocated to the U.S. oil companies Conoco, Amoco, Chevron and Phillips before Somalia's pro-U.S. President Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in January, 1991."

And the people in these three countries?

Generally living in grinding poverty, with only a few of the elite enjoying the good life at the top.

When people believe that they have a possibility of a better future, and more sharing in the wealth these countries are producing, they generally aren't going to be picking up rifles or setting off bombs.

But what countless administrations seem to be continuing to do in these countries - in a way that is almost terrifyingly pathological - is to support tinpot dictators for as long as they can, extract what they and the corporations who support them want, then are suddenly amazed when citizens of these countries want some of the rewards their natural resources are bringing to actually return to the citizens of those countries.

CNN: 'Top secret' weapons to be used at political conventions

CNN’s Ed Lavendera reports that Congress is giving $100 million to pay security expenses for this summer’s political conventions. Denver and St. Paul officials have said that the types of weapons being purchased are “top secret.”

The ACLU is suing both cities to disclose how security money is being spent.

RAW STORY has more details here.

This video is from CNN’s American Morning, broadcast July 7, 2008.

Download video TranscriptROBERTS: Pepper ball rifles, goo guns, sonic rays. some are wild rumors but some may not be. some may protect our political convention this year. Ed Lavandera in Denver where the democrats will meet and he’s got more.

Surveillance doesn't prevent criminal activity

The research found no significant correlation between crime rates and the cameras. As an ACLU analysis of the report explains, "In Hollywood, violent crime decreased less in target areas with cameras than in the surrounding areas ... . Property crimes in Hollywood decreased slightly more in the camera area (17.8 percent to 16.4 percent), although rates of vandalism and auto theft fared worse than in control areas." Equally insignificant disparities were found in the Watts housing project.

People may feel the need to "defy" the cameras. he cameras can be defeated by the simple expedient of wearing a hoodie. Meanwhile, I have seen these baseball caps with infra-red emitting LEDs around the brim and a small battery. To other people, the LEDs do not appear to do anything, but to security cameras, they create a white glow that obliterates the face.

Judge Orders YouTube to Give All User Histories to Viacom

Google will have to turn over every record of every video watched by YouTube users, including users' names and IP addresses, to Viacom, which is suing Google for allowing clips of its copyright videos to appear on YouTube, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Viacom wants the data to prove that infringing material is more popular than user-created videos, which could be used to increase Google's liability if it is found guilty of contributory infringement.

Want some torture with your peanuts?

Just when you thought you've heard it all...

A senior government official with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has expressed great interest in a so-called safety bracelet that would serve as a stun device, similar to that of a police Taser®. According to this promotional video found at the Lamperd Less Lethal website, the bracelet would be worn by all airline passengers.

This bracelet would:

• take the place of an airline boarding pass

• contain personal information about the traveler

• be able to monitor the whereabouts of each passenger and his/her luggage

• shock the wearer on command, completely immobilizing him/her for several minutes

Kiss the last of tourism goodbye.

Feds investigate whether model rocket passed jet

Federal authorities are investigating whether a model rocket shot past a jet that had just left a Houston airport.

About 148 passengers were aboard the Continental flight in late May when an object with a flaming tail was seen streaming past a cockpit window.

If the passengers and crew could see it, it wasn't a model. Either the US is testing missiles near civilian flight paths again, or we just missed a false-flag shoot down.

Continental airliner buzzed by enthusiast model rocket?

First thing, to build a large model rocket capable of making 5000 ft in altitude, and still under power ( according to the pilot ) is an undertaking far more complicated than the 'unpredictable' rockets you flew in Jr. High. A rocket to make that altitude under power would have to have been constructed by a serious rocketeer and serious rocketeer would not launch a rocket that size without FAA clearance. Firt of all, it would require a larger launching apparatus than your typical Estes model rocket. The highest flying Estes model rocket reaches an altitude of 2600 feet, so my suspition is the illegal firework. I would not be suprised if the individuals responsible ignited the firework in an attempt to come near the plane. As far as unpredictable flight paths, speaking as a model rocket enthusiast, in order to get a rocket to 5000 feet or higher, it must fly straight as an arrow. If it was indeed a model that had an 'unpredictable' flight pattern, it never would have made 5000 feet.

Model rocket hobbyists are being scape-goated for something else that happened!

Was rocket moments from striking Continental flight?

On Memorial Day, the Continental pilot reported being startled by his encounter with this object that "went straight up" and left a long white vapor trail.

Yet the trail to identifying this object has appeared to run cold since the FAA and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force launched their investigation into the episode.

We may have just missed a false-flag "terror" attack by "Al Qaeda" (nudge nudge wink wink).

The news story at the time was that the rocket was probably a "hobby" rocket. Well, being a rocket hobbiest myself, this story never made sense. Hobby rockets are too small to be seen by a passenger jet. Amateur rocket enthusiasts have special areas set aside by the FAA to conduct flights, and more to the point, most hobby rocket engines have very short burn times, which means a hobby rocket reaching the altitude of the passenger jet would no longer be trailing a white trail. Certainly hobby or model rockets won't go "20 miles" up as the pilot described.

The fact that investigation has "gone cold" since the FAA and the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force took charge signals a cover-up of some kind.

UK: Toddlers who dislike spicy food 'racist'

The National Children's Bureau, which receives £12 million a year, mainly from Government funded organisations, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.

This could include a child of as young as three who says "yuk" in response to being served unfamiliar foreign food.

Yet another governmental agency desperate to justify its existence, to the tune of 12 million pounds from the British government: unflipping believable!

Some kids like some foods, but dislike others for reasons which have absolutely nothing to do with racism!

Thinking UK citizens with kids: get out now if you still can!

Plan Mexico Gets Rough US Contractor Leads Torture Training in Mexico

The existence of a training led by a US defense contractor to teach Mexican police torture tactics in order to combat organized crime and the local government's adamant defense of the program is particularly disturbing considering the US government's recent approval of the $1.6 billion Plan Mexico, also known as the Merida Initiative. Plan Mexico is an aid package specifically designed to support President Felipe Calderón's deadly battle against organized crime. It will fund more US training for Mexican police and military, in addition to providing them with riot gear, spy equipment, and military aircraft. Plan Mexico allows funds for the deployment of up to fifty US defense contractors to Mexico.

Torture: this administration loves it so much that it not only does it domestically and outsources it internationally; it also contracts to teach it to foreign intelligence and police departments!

Big Pharma Is in a Frenzy to Bring Cannabis-Based Medicines to Market

Big Pharma is busily applying for -- and has already received -- multiple patents for the medical properties of pot. These include patents for synthetic pot derivatives (such as the oral THC pill Marinol), cannabinoid agonists (synthetic agents that bind to the brain's endocannabinoid receptors) like HU-210 and cannabis antagonists such as Rimonabant. This trend was most recently summarized in the NIH paper (pdf), "The endocannabinoid system as an emerging target of pharmacotherapy," which concluded, "The growing interest in the underlying science has been matched by a growth in the number of cannabinoid drugs in pharmaceutical development from two in 1995 to 27 in 2004." In other words, at the same time the American Medical Association is proclaiming that pot has no medical value, Big Pharma is in a frenzy to bring dozens of new, cannabis-based medicines to market.
