BP:

National Security Used As Pretext to Confiscate Samples and Notes On Dispersant, Homeland Security Works For BP

I’m an adjunct professor here at A&M, and we were also in the Gulf, but got thrown out. We were testing a theory that the chemical composition of the dispersant they were using was causing the oil to sink. And we’d been there for approximately three days, and federal agents flat told us to get out. And it wasn’t Fish and Wildlife officers. These were Homeland Security officers, and we were told that it was in the interest of national security.

So basically The Department of Homeland Security is working FOR BP!? This is open treason and should be prosecuted accordingly! If this was just a normal oil disaster why would Homeland Security be confiscating scientific samples?

Evidence Mounts of BP Spraying Toxic Dispersants

Shirley and Don Tillman, residents of Pass Christian, Mississippi, have owned shrimp boats, an oyster boat and many pleasure boats. They spent much time on the Gulf of Mexico before working in BP’s Vessels Of Opportunity (VOO) program looking for and trying to clean up oil.

Don decided to work in the VOO program in order to assist his brother, who was unable to do so due to health problems. Thus, Don worked on the boat and Shirley decided to join him as a deckhand most of the days.

Yesterday near Bay Chaland, Louisiana: FOUR FOOT wide, four inch thick “oil patty” + 100,000s of dead fish = NO TESTING TO SEE IF FROM BP’S OIL

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said to WWL, “This is different because usually the kills happen to only one or two species of fish.” Many species were observed dead including crab, sting ray, eel, drum, speckled trout and red fish. A whale was also reported to have died.

Nungesser added “There is no testing going on to determine if it’s from the oil spill.”

And according to the AP, “Plaquemines Parish officials have asked state wildlife experts to investigate… Parish officials say the fish were found in an area that has been impacted by oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Scientists Find Thick Layer Of Oil On Seafloor

Scientists on a research vessel in the Gulf of Mexico are finding a substantial layer of oily sediment stretching for dozens of miles in all directions. Their discovery suggests that a lot of oil from the Deepwater Horizon didn't simply evaporate or dissipate into the water — it has settled to the seafloor.

Thousands of fish and a dead whale on Monday were found dead at the mouth of a shipping channel in Venice.

Species include crabs, sting rays, eels, drum, speckled trout and red fish.

Their discovery suggests that a lot of oil from the Deepwater Horizon didn't simply evaporate or dissipate into the water — it has settled to the seafloor.

The Research Vessel Oceanus sailed on Aug. 21 on a mission to figure out what happened to the more than 4 million barrels of oil that gushed into the water. Onboard, Samantha Joye, a professor in the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia, says she suddenly has a pretty good idea about where a lot of it ended up. It's showing up in samples of the seafloor, between the well site and the coast.

Alabama — Tired of waiting for millions in lost tax revenue and expense claims, Orange Beach officials are packing up staff and medical equipment and moving out of BP PLC contractor work sites on Monday, Mayor Tony Kennon said Saturday.

“We’re going to pull out all of our firemen and paramedics because BP won’t pay their bills,”

Public Website Created for Examination of Environmental Sampling Data

For weeks, Attorney Stuart Smith and researchers Dr. William Sawyer and Marco Kaltofen have been providing evidence contrary to the federal government's assertions that the oil from the BP DEEPWATER HORIZON catastrophe is gone and that seafood from oil-impacted waters are not compromised.

Now, citizens can examine for themselves data compiled by Gulf Oil Disaster Recovery and the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) at a public website maintained by Dr. Kaltofen's company, Boston Chemical Data.

"We are thrilled about this new resource," said Marylee Orr, Executive Director, LEAN. "This website allows anyone interested to see what chemicals were found, where they were found, and how much was found. We feel the public has the right to this information."

The Corexit Experiment - Oil Spill Law

Raw Footage: Dispersant is STILL being sprayed, plumes in Florida and Alabama

Project Gulf Impact has released a new video that shows the dispersant/oil plumes that we reported on a little under a week ago. Some of the dispersant was still in powder form, an indication that it was freshly sprayed!

This is some raw video footage taken from a Project Gulf Impact boat trip we took on August 24th, 2010. Within minutes of departing in Perdido Bay, Florida, we came across massive amounts of oil that had been obviously freshly sprayed with Corexit. The problem was, the dispersed oil wasn’t just in one place, but it was everywhere we went between there and Dauphin Island, AL. This is one of the worst we have ever seen it, with the dispersant still in powder form in some cases. This is happening in massive quantities across the Gulf of Mexico everyday. For those of you who don’t know, Corexit 9500 and 9527A (the oil dispersant) are some of the most poisonous substances on Earth. They are greatly impacting our Gulf, and the animals and HUMANS who reside in it. Help support Project Gulf Impact’s continuing efforts to get the truth out to the public, get aid to the people who need it most.

Project Gulf Impact: Three Different Doctors find PAHs, Heavy Metals, and Arsenic in Blood

It’s been a collaboration of a couple of groups working on the oil spill and other people.

They are actually finding the toxins that are in the oil in the blood of the people who live down there.

Its horrifying because they’re cumulative and they’re heavy metals and toxins…

Risks remain with Gulf well cap coming off

NEW ORLEANS — The cap that ended BP's three-month oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico was set to come off Thursday as a prelude to raising a massive, failed piece of equipment and preparing for a final seal on the broken seafloor well.

Engineers and the government were not expecting crude to break out again when the cap is lifted, but the government wasn't offering any guarantees and oil collection vessels were set to be on standby on the surface just in case.

Mississippi officials find 80 to 90 PERCENT of OYSTERS DEAD — claim NO EVIDENCE OIL CONTRIBUTED

Officials from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) voluntarily “took oyster fishermen out on the reefs off the Pass Christian Harbor on Wednesday to give them a preview of what to expect from the upcoming oyster season,” according to Biloxi’s Sun Herald.

What did they find? “An abundance of empty oyster shells… DMR officials dredged for oysters and pulled up catches with about 80 to 90 percent of the oysters dead,” the paper reported.

Even as BP and US government officials continue to declare the oil spill over at Mississippi Canyon 252 and the cleanup operation an unqualified success, for the first time blood tests on sickened humans have shown signs of exposure to high levels of toxic chemicals related to crude oil and dispersants. Some of the individuals tested have not been on the beaches, were not involved in any cleanup operations or in the Gulf water -- they simply live along the Gulf Coast

Oil sheen spreading from rig blast site

A mile-long oil sheen spread Thursday from an offshore petroleum platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP's massive spill.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said the sheen, about 100 feet wide, was spotted near the platform owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy Inc.

Feds Warn Residents Near Wyoming Gas Drilling Sites Not to Drink Their Water

The federal government is warning residents in a small Wyoming town with extensive natural gas development not to drink their water, and to use fans and ventilation when showering or washing clothes in order to avoid the risk of an explosion.

The announcement accompanied results from a second round of testing and analysis in the town of Pavillion by Superfund investigators for the Environmental Protection Agency. Researchers found benzene, metals, naphthalene, phenols and methane in wells and in groundwater.

With Neighbors Unaware, Toxic Spill at a BP Plant

While the world was focused on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a BP refinery here released huge amounts of toxic chemicals into the air that went unnoticed by residents until many saw their children come down with respiratory problems.

For 40 days after a piece of equipment critical to the refinery’s operation broke down, a total of 538,000 pounds of toxic chemicals, including the carcinogen benzene, poured out of the refinery.

Rather than taking the costly step of shutting down the refinery to make repairs, the engineers at the plant diverted gases to a smokestack and tried to burn them off, but hundreds of thousands of pounds still escaped into the air, according to state environmental officials.

Neither the state nor the oil company informed neighbors or local officials about the pollutants until two weeks after the release ended, and angry residents of Texas City have signed up in droves to join a $10 billion class-action lawsuit against BP. The state attorney general, Greg Abbott, has also sued the company, seeking fines of about $600,000.

That final report said the release of chemicals had gone on for 959 hours, until May 16. Among other pollutants, the plant had released 17,000 pounds of benzene; 37,000 pounds of nitrogen oxides, which can cause respiratory problems; and 186,000 pounds of carbon monoxide. Another 262,000 pounds of various volatile organic compounds also escaped.

“The state’s investigation shows that BP’s failure to properly maintain its equipment caused the malfunction and could have been prevented,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement.

BP: We might drill again in disaster zone

BP PLC said Friday it might someday drill again into the same lucrative undersea pocket of oil that spilled millions of gallons of crude, wrecked livelihoods and fouled beaches along the Gulf of Mexico.
"There's lots of oil and gas here," Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said at a news briefing. "We're going to have to think about what to do with that at some point."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive me, but has this gentleman just gone barking mad?!?!?
And what guarantee does the US public, and particularly those in the Gulf whose lives, livelihoods, and health has been destroyed, that BP isn't going to cause another catastrophe here?!?

BP ultimatum: Let us drill or funds will dry up

Oil giant BP is telling lawmakers that if it isn't allowed to get new offshore drilling permits in the Gulf, it will not be able to afford to pay for the damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the New York Times reported in its Friday edition.

The Times reports the UK-based oil giant is on the warpath against a drilling reform bill passed by the House earlier this summer that would effectively bar BP from getting new drilling permits in the US.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In a normal world, where representatives of the people of the country actually determined what when on in the country, this threat would be characterized as "blackmail"; however, because BP has certain "male attributes" they are able to squeeze very forcibly in both the White House and Congress, I would almost bet that BP will get those new offshore drilling permits.

60% of Canadians Live Payday to Payday

Globe and Mai

The recession may be officially over, but six in 10 Canadians are still surviving from paycheque to paycheque, a national survey showed Monday.

Fifty-nine per cent of Canadian workers say they would be in financial trouble if their paycheque was delayed by just a week – the same proportion as last year when the economy was still mired in a downturn, according to a poll of 2,766 people by the Canadian Payroll Association.

Also Monday, a Statistics Canada report showed household net worth fell 0.6 per cent in the second quarter, largely due to falling stock markets. Liabilities of households increased, meantime, led by mortgages and consumer credit.

How did we get this way and what can we do about it? Share your story and advice with Globe readers.

Younger workers are having the greatest trouble meeting their current expenses, with two thirds of those aged 18-34 saying it would be very difficult, difficult or somewhat difficult for them to meet their current financial obligations if they missed even one paycheque.

Among households, the situation is most precarious for single parents, with three quarters saying they would have some trouble making ends meet if their pay were delayed.

'One in seven Americans living in poverty' but Buffet remains bullish that U.S. economy will recover

In a further setback to U.S. President Barack Obama's economic plans, new figures are set to show one in seven Americans is now living in poverty.

The increase in the number of people living below the poverty line is the sharpest since 1959, a new census will reveal.

The figures represent around 45 million people, out of population of 307 million, living in poverty and the situation is expected to get worse with the overall poverty rate potentially rising to 15 per cent.

Global Collapse of the Fiat Money System: Too Big To Fail Global Banks Will Collapse Between Now and First Quarter 2011

http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20853

When the ball hits the ceiling fan, sometime early 2011 at the earliest, there will be massive bank runs.

I expect that the FED and other central banks will pre-empt such a run and will do the following:

1) Disallow cash withdrawals from banks beyond a certain amount, say US$1,000 per day
2) Disallow cash transactions up to a certain amount, say US$10,000 for certain transactions
3) Transactions (investments) for metals (gold and silver) will be restricted.
4) Worst-case scenario – the confiscation of gold AS HAPPENED IN WORLD WAR II.
5) Imposition of capital controls etc.
6) Legislations that will compel most daily commercial transactions to be conducted through Debit and or Credit Cards
7) Legislations to make it a criminal offense for any contraventions of the above.

Obama says bin Laden's gone 'deep underground' but top minds working constantly to find him

President Barack Obama says Osama bin Laden has gone "deep underground" because of U.S. pressure on al-Qaida. He says the best intelligence officers and special forces are working night and day to capture him.

Obama says it remains a high priority to capture or kill the al-Qaida leader who was the architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. He says getting bin Laden would be extremely important to the country's national security _ though it wouldn't solve all the problems.

Obama says that al-Qaida is "holed up" in a way that's made it difficult for the group to operate.

Obama spoke in response to a question at a White House news conference Friday, the day before the Sept. 11 anniversary.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I already found him, and yes he is deep underground.

Nothing Links 9-11 "Suspects" to the Crime – FBI

In our investigation, we have not uncovered a single piece of paper – either here in the U.S. or in the treasure trove of information that has turned up in Afghanistan and elsewhere – that mentioned any aspect of the September 11th plot.

60 Israelis who had been detained in connection with the Sept. 11 terrorism investigation.

BRIT HUME, HOST: Last time we reported on the approximately 60 Israelis who had been detained in connection with the Sept. 11 terrorism investigation. Carl Cameron reported that U.S. investigators suspect that some of these Israelis were spying on Arabs in this country, and may have turned up information on the planned terrorist attacks back in September that was not passed on.

Tonight, in the second of four reports on spying by Israelis in the U.S., we learn about an Israeli-based private communications company, for whom a half-dozen of those 60 detained suspects worked. American investigators fear information generated by this firm may have fallen into the wrong hands and had the effect of impeded the Sept. 11 terror inquiry. Here's Carl Cameron's second report.

Pentagon seeks to suppress book by 9/11 whistleblower

The US Department of Defense is negotiating with a major US publisher, St. Martin’s Press, to buy and destroy all 10,000 copies of a book written by a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer about his experiences in Afghanistan.

The author, Anthony A. Shaffer, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, reportedly repeats his declaration, first made in 2005, that US intelligence agencies had identified the leader of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Mohammed Atta, and three other suicide hijackers well in advance of September 11, 2001.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Folks, this is a silly propaganda stunt. By claiming to oppose the book and buy it up, the government hopes you will view the book as containing something the government does not want you to read, so that you will accept the claim as fact.

That the book is pushing the official "Arabs did 9-11" myth is your first warning sign.

The second is history. In 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr. died is a highly suspicious plane crash. Shortly after, the The July 26th, 1999 issue of Newsweek was literally blocked from the news stands. There was no case of a rush to buy up all copies; the magazine was literally ordered off the delivery trucks and back to the warehouses for destruction. There was no huge media release of this erasure of the issue. The official story was that Newsweek wanted to replace the cover to deal with the plane crash, but that specific issue never appeared on the stands. What finally came out was that the issue had included an article in which John F. Kennedy Jr. had announced his intentions to run for the Senate seat later occupied by Hillary Clinton. Had Kennedy not died, there is no question that with his family name, good looks, and absence of cattle-trades and Mena in his background, he would have won.

So, the fact that the Pentagon buy up of this book is getting headline treament tell you this is a staged psyop to re-sell the official "Arabs did 9-11, honest!" story.

Obama Extends Bush’s 9/11 State of Emergency

In a letter issued to the heads of Congress today, President Barack Obama announced yet another one year extension of a State of National Emergency which has been going on in the United States since September 14, 2001. This means that as of Tuesday America will officially be entering its tenth year at an emergency posture them seems destined to last pretty much forever.

PROPAGANDA ALERT Fire, Not Explosives, Felled 3rd Tower on 9/11, Report Says

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/nyregion/22wtccnd.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2

Using videos, photographs and building design documents, the investigators at the National Institute spent the last three years building an elaborate computer model of 7 World Trade Center that they used to test various chains of events to figure out what caused the collapse, Dr. Sunder said.

...

Dr. Sunder said the investigators chose not to use the computer model to evaluate whether a thermite-fueled fire might have brought down the tower, since 100 pounds of it would have had to have been stacked directly against the critical column that gave way, which he said they did not believe had occurred.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, early in the article they brag about this wonderful computer model they developed to determine what happened to World Trade Tower 7, then chosenot to use it to test the thermite theory. We know why. The model, if indeed accurate, would have confirmed that the only way for World Trade Tower 7 to collapse straight down into its own footprint was for every single load bearing column, over 70, to fail at the exact same moment.

Note also the diss at the end that those who refuse to accept the official story must have psychological problems.

We refuse to accept the official story because it is a huge steaming pile of bovine excrement.

My letter to the New York Times

So let me see if I have this correct. The investigators ( I use that term loosely here) brag about this very complete computer model of World Trade Tower 7 early in the story, then deeper in we learn that the investigators choose NOT to use it?

That is why the public no longer trusts the official explanation of anything, or the corporate media that continues to promote it.

One Meridien Plaza

The twelve-alarm fire burned for 18 hours. The extreme heat caused window glass and frames to melt and concrete floor slabs and steel beams to buckle and sag dramatically. Large shards of window glass fell from the facade, cutting through fire hoses on the ground around the building. Three firefighters were trapped on a fully engulfed floor, and efforts to rescue them failed.

The fire would not yield and there were increasing concerns about the stability of the structure. Fire officials called off the attack and allowed the fire to "free burn," concentrating their efforts on containing the fire to this building. When the fire reached the 30th floor, a tenant-installed fire-sprinkler system was activated, and the worst high-rise fire in U.S. history was finally brought under control.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yet the building remained standing. Quite a contrast to the New York Times insistence that fire brought down World Trade Tower 7. Indeed it must be recalled that outside of 9-11, no steel framed building has ever collapsed from fire either before or since 9-11, and building 7, housing government offices, was built to federal requirements, which greatly exceed the normal building codes of the other, non-collapsed buildings.

RCMP warn against threat of coup d’etat

September 12, 2010 by Alex

http://theintelhub.com/2010/09/12/rcmp-warn-against-threat-of-coup-d%E2%80%99etat/

The Vancouver Sun

OTTAWA — RCMP officials have identified a new threat to national security: a coup d’etat.

The reference to a violent overthrow of the federal government is contained in the RCMP’s plans and priorities report to government for 2010-11. It lists national security as one of five operational priorities for the year.

The document then cites four specific security concerns:

• Espionage and sabotage.

• Foreign-influenced criminal activities detrimental to the interests of Canada.

• Terrorism.

• And . . . “activities aimed at overthrowing, by violence, the Government of Canada.”

Tightened muzzle on scientists is 'Orwellian'

© Copyright (c) The Vancouver Sun

The Harper government has tightened the muzzle on federal scientists, going so far as to control when and what they can say about floods at the end of the last ice age.

Natural Resources Canada (NRC) scientists were told this spring they need "pre-approval" from Minister Christian Paradis' office to speak with journalists. Their "media lines" also need ministerial approval, say documents obtained by Postmedia News through access-to-information legislation.

The documents say the "new" rules went into force in March.

They also give a glimpse of how Canadians are being cut off from scientists whose work is financed by taxpayers, critics say, and is often of significant public interest -- be it about fish stocks, genetically modified crops or mercury pollution in the Athabasca River.

The policy applies to "high-profile" issues such as "climate change, oilsands" and when "the reporter is with an international or national media organization (such as the CBC or the Canwest paper chain)," she wrote.

"If you can't get access to a nice, feel-good science story about flooding at the end of last glaciation, can you imagine trying to get access to scientists with information about cadmium and mercury in the Athabasca River? Absolutely impossible," says Weaver, in reference to growing controversy over contaminants downstream from Alberta's oilsands.

Environment Canada and Health Canada now tightly control media access to researchers and orchestrate interviews that are approved.

Environment Canada has even produced "media lines" for federal scientists to stick to when discussing climate studies they have coauthored with Weaver and are based on research paid for through his university grants.

"There is no question that there is an orchestrated campaign at the federal level to make sure that their scientists can't communicate to the public about what they do," says Weaver, adding that the crackdown is seriously undermining morale in federal labs. "Science is about generating new knowledge and communicating it to others."

Tony Blair (the man many call a war criminal) awarded a medal by Bill Clinton for his 'resolution of conflicts' around the world

He took Britain into the ill-fated conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But last night Tony Blair was honoured in America with a medal, £64,000 prize and a banquet - for his services to peace.

The former Prime Minister was given the prestigious Liberty Medal in Philadelphia for his role in 'bringing liberty to people around the world'.

He joins the likes of Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Mikhail Gorbachev and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, who have all been awarded the medal, which has been given out every year since 1989.

Former British PM Tony Blair gets Liberty Medal

PHILADELPHIA — Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair received the Liberty Medal on Monday for his global human rights work and commitment to international conflict resolution.

The Philadelphia-based National Constitution Center gives the medal annually to individuals or organizations whose actions strive to bring liberty to people worldwide.

Blair was honored for his work with the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which promotes religious tolerance; for his initiative to improve governance in Africa; and for advancing peace in Northern Ireland and the Middle East, among other efforts.

After accepting the award from former President Bill Clinton, Blair said that liberty is the result of "ordinary human beings doing extraordinary things in the midst of Earth-changing events."

Dr David Kelly's body 'had obviously been moved': Paramedic at death scene reveals concerns over Hutton Inquiry

The paramedic who confirmed the death of Government scientist Dr David Kelly has claimed his body had ‘obviously been moved’ in the minutes after it was found.

David Bartlett was one of two medics called after the corpse of the weapons expert was discovered in woods near his Oxfordshire home seven years ago. They were among the first on the scene.

The testimony by the experienced paramedics once again brings into doubt the thoroughness of the Hutton Inquiry – in particular raising questions about why police officers were not asked whether they had touched or moved the body.

In a letter to its members last week, Associated Press made the announcement that bloggers should be cited as a news source. This is a significant move from the AP, given that they have a history of not exactly ‘getting on’ with bloggers. Given that such a large news organisation has made a point of recognising bloggers as a viable news source, which they should have done a long time ago, it has much wider implications on how bloggers affect the news agenda and overall news industry. We’ve already seen some developments in this area, such as publishers employing bloggers on the ground, but I think this goes one further than that. The announcement has served to recognise the work that bloggers put into breaking and reporting stories. But interestingly they make a point of saying that they must credit information where it occured from a website, so you would hope that this would cover Twitter as well, given that so many stories break on here.

AP begins crediting bloggers as news sources. (TheNextWeb)

AP Minnesota’s guidelines for what to write about if you want to be published (BusinessInsider)

If you're wondering why the media usually paints a picture of a world that's more violent and dangerous and hysterical than your average Schwarzenneger movie, just check out what the AP considers "news".

The bullets below are adapted from AP Minnesota's guidelines for local papers who want to get their stories picked up by AP.

They were assembled by Libby Reinish for savethenews.org:

News:

  • Train wrecks, airplane crashes, drownings, fatal auto accidents (if there are multiple victims or unusual circumstances) and unusual accidental deaths
  • Meetings where action of regional or statewide interest is taken or where a prominent person speaks
  • Riots, demonstrations, strikes
  • Major fires (involves loss of life, public disruption or destruction of a structure/site known statewide), explosions, oil or other chemical spills.
  • Unusual bank robberies (exceptionally violent, hostages taken, serial robber, etc.)
  • Weather news, including ice and hail storms, heavy snows, damaging rains and floods, record heat and cold, tornadoes; and,
  • Human interest stories. The odd, the offbeat, the heart-warming.

Not News:

  • Non-fatal auto or boating accidents
  • Motor vehicle chases, unless major damage or loss of life occurs
  • Routine city council, school board or other public meetings, unless an issue being discussed at other meetings around the state -- such as state budget cuts -- is discussed
  • Bomb threats (unless a MAJOR public disruption results), petty crimes, minor drug busts, minor or non-fatal fires
  • Suicides or obituaries unless the person is known regionally or statewide or unusual circumstances are involved; and, Publicity handouts, including local pageant winners, fund-raisers and charity events.

The guidelines for AP Ohio, largely the same, had this gem of an addition:

Yes: Single-victim murders that involve unusual circumstances, a prominent person or happen outside the metropolitan areas, where murders are common...

No: Routine one-victim murders in big cities, where murders are more common.

UPDATE: Paul Colford of the AP sent the following explanation of what the guidelines are for and noted that AP does other work besides this:

Member newspapers and/or broadcasters that subscribe to the AP wire and services in a given state – Ohio and Minnesota, for example, as listed by the blog you cite – sometimes interact with the AP bureau in the state, seeking and suggesting pickup by AP of some of their own stories. Those guidelines, if you will, help the uninitiated distinguish the everyday story from the more compelling news that would be of interest to the wider AP audience.

At the same time, as you well know, there’s much more enterprise involved over all in AP’s global news reporting.

Ex-CIA Agents Confirm Torture at Polish Black Site

Former CIA agents have confirmed for the first time that the agency tortured prisoners at a "black site" detention center in north-eastern Poland at the height of the war on terror. According to the Associated Press, a former CIA agent identified only as "Albert" tortured the terror suspect Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri multiple times with an electric drill at the converted Stare Kiejkuty military base near Szymany in the Masuria region of Poland.

Bombshell from London

THE London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), is the world’s leading think tank for military affairs. It represents the top echelon of defence experts, retired officers and senior military men, spanning the globe from the United States and Britain to China, Russia and India.

I’ve been an IISS member for over 20 years. IISS’s reports are always authoritative but usually cautious and diplomatic, sometimes dull. However, two weeks ago the IISS issued an explosive report on Afghanistan that is shaking Washington and its Nato allies.

The report, presided over by the former deputy director of Britain’s foreign intelligence agency, MI-6, says the threat from al-Qaeda and Taliban has been "exaggerated" by the western powers. The US-led mission in Afghanistan has "ballooned" out of all proportion from its original aim of disrupting and defeating al-Qaeda. The US-led war in Afghanistan, says IISS, using uncharacteristically blunt language, is "a long-drawn-out disaster".

Just recently, CIA chief Leon Panetta admitted there were no more than 50 members of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Yet US President Barack Obama has tripled the number of US soldiers there to 120,000 to fight Al Qaeda.

UK Teenager Banned From America For Life Over Obscene Obama Email

A British teenager who sent an email to the White House calling President Obama an obscenity was banned from America for life, The Sun reported Monday.

The FBI asked local cops to tell college student Luke Angel, 17, his drunken insult was "unacceptable."

Angel said he fired off a single email criticizing the U.S. government after seeing a TV program about the 9/11 attacks.

He said, "I don't remember exactly what I wrote as I was drunk. But I think I called Barack Obama a p***k. It was silly -- the sort of thing you do when you're a teenager and have had a few."

Webmaster's Commentary:

It's also the sort of thing you say when you are on old fart with a scotch under the belt watching the President make the nation that just attacked Americans in International waters. I do not know what the White House is thinking they accomplished with this ban on a teenage boy, other than to make the President look like a petty tyrant whose vanity is too easily offended.

Israel can kill an American and nothing gets done. A teenager calls Obama a p____ and all hell breaks loose! Basically Obama just revealed that he loves to bully those weaker than himself, and lacks the manly attributes to go after a real threat.

Feds Spent $800,000 of Economic Stimulus on African Genital-Washing Program

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), spent $823,200 of economic stimulus funds in 2009 on a study by a UCLA research team to teach uncircumcised African men how to wash their genitals after having sex.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What the [REDACTED]!!!!
4000 homeless on this island alone, jobs leaving for other shores, manufacturing in decline, paved roads being allowed to turn back to dirt, and the Federal Government although drowning on self-created debt spends almost a million dollars of your money to teach Africans how to wash their dicks?!?

U.S. schools: grooming students for a surveillance state

Schools are increasingly invading student privacy both in school and outside of school. Are schools grooming youth to passively accept a surveillance state where they have no expectation of privacy anywhere? A PogoWasRight.org commentary.

The increasing use of student surveillance and intrusion of school districts into students’ extra-curricular conduct should alarm us all. Whether it is a district surveilling students in their bedrooms via webcam, conducting random drug or locker searches, strip-searching students, lowering the standard for searching students to “reasonable suspicion” from “probable cause,” disciplining students for conduct outside of school hours, searching their cellphones and text messages, or allegedly forcing them to undergo pregnancy testing, student privacy is under increasing threat.

The other day I mentioned a Connecticut school district that wanted to require students to carry an ID card with an RFID chip so that they could track their location. The surveillance capability included locating the student if they were off school premises and in town. Today, I came across another news story from earlier this month that also involves tracking students. KTVU in California reported that the Contra Costa County School District began introducing a tracking system for preschool students that would alert staff when a student leaves school premises. In order to accomplish that, students will reportedly be required to wear a jersey that contains the RFID tag that uses Wi-Fi to send signals to sensors located throughout the school.

I realize that some might argue that these are just little pre-schoolers and of course, we want to protect their safety, etc., but keep in mind that one of the major justifications for the program is to save staff time in terms of having to manually record attendance, etc. In exchange for that time and cost-saving, what price do we pay psychologically as a society? It strikes me that schools are grooming our youth to simply accept being tracked and monitored wherever they go and that anything they do, anywhere, can be used against them in school or elsewhere.

Is this really how we want to raise our children? To be sheep who accept being tracked and who have little sense of privacy or entitlement to privacy?

A study released last year by Fordham Law’s Center on Law and Information Privacy found that the education sector was not doing enough to protect the privacy of student information. It did not, however, look at the question of whether schools were actually invading student privacy and systematically eroding student privacy rights and autonomy. It’s time for a national dialogue about student privacy, while there are still some remnants of it left.

California students get tracking devices

RICHMOND, Calif.—California officials are outfitting preschoolers in Contra Costa County with tracking devices they say will save staff time and money.

The system was introduced Tuesday. When at the school, students will wear a jersey that has a small radio frequency tag. The tag will send signals to sensors that help track children's whereabouts, attendance and even whether they've eaten or not.

The Government's New Right to Track Your Every Move With GPS

http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/08599201315000%3B_ylt%3DAneLdFYRoz2nbjjWeg32XpwUewgF%3B_ylu%3DX3oDMTM1YmVrZWpsBGFzc2V0A3RpbWUvMjAxMDA4MjUvMDg1OTkyMDEzMTUwMDAEY2NvZGUDbW9zdHBvcHVsYXIEY3BvcwM0BHBvcwM0BHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcmllcwRzbGsDdGhlZ292ZXJubWVu

Government agents can sneak onto your property in the middle of the night, put a GPS device on the bottom of your car and keep track of everywhere you go. This doesn't violate your Fourth Amendment rights, because you do not have any reasonable expectation of privacy in your own driveway - and no reasonable expectation that the government isn't tracking your movements.

That is the bizarre - and scary - rule that now applies in California and eight other Western states. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which covers this vast jurisdiction, recently decided the government can monitor you in this way virtually anytime it wants - with no need for a search warrant.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I guess this is the correct way to salute the flag after all!

Apparently, jamming a GPS is far easier than you might imagine. Common electronics like a VHF/UHF antenna pre-amp can distort the signals.

homemade GPS jammer

Homemade GPS jammer

http://www.navigadget.com/index.php/2007/01/29/homemade-gps-jammer

Today we are featuring an article from Phrack – an online hacker magazine. What we have is a do-it-yourself GPS jammer that can have a range of upto several hundred feet. Keep in mind this is not an easy hack – a bachelors in electrical engineering seems like a prerequisite.

The GPS band pass filter is a 2-pole Toko 4DFA-1575B-12 ceramic dielectric filter from Digi-Key[4], part number TKS2609CT-ND. This part is optional, but helps clean up the RF spectrum before further amplification. The filter’s insertion loss is around 2 dB.

The final RF amplifier is a WJ Communications AH102. It provides another 13 dB of gain, with a higher P1dB compression point of around +27 dBm (500 mW). The AH102 draws the most current of any part, and is not really necessary if you’re aiming for a low range, low current, battery operated device.

This hack is designed to be a low cost one, only using components you can easily find at a trip to Radio Shack. It targets the Global Positioning System (GPS/NAVSTAR) L1 frequency of 1575.42 MHz. Also keep in mind this device will not work against the Russian GLONASS or European Galileo systems.

GPS Jamming

You think the only time you have to worry about getting your GPS jammed is during wartime? Think again -- these devices are so sensitive that many things could jam them. And a VFR GPS won't necessarily even warn you it is jammed.

February 12, 2003

by

You've seen the news reports: Russian-made jammers may be used against U.S. GPS-based weapon systems in Iraq, and there have been warnings about this technology in the hands of terrorists. U.S. Representative Joseph R. Pitts (R-Penn.), a former Air Force officer, has a page on the topic on his Web site. How serious is the threat of GPS jamming, and what can we in the GA community do about it?

After a week researching this topic, I have to tell you that it's pretty serious -- regardless of what the Russians may or may not have sold to terrorists. An anonymous author has provided a detailed technical description of how to build a GPS jammer at a hacker's Web site. The U.S. Air Force itself has been conducting GPS jamming exercises -- one such exercise is scheduled for March 10-14, 2003, in the Yukon MOA near Fairbanks, Alaska. There has been at least one well-documented case of unintentional jamming, and the U.S. Federal GPS Policy makes clear that GPS, while now supervised by a joint inter-agency governing board, is subject to control by the National Command Authority. That means the President can decide to jam the entire system if he decides it is necessary.

Sensitive = Vulnerable

GPS is particularly vulnerable to jamming, because the receivers are exquisitely sensitive -- they have to be, to receive the extremely weak signal from orbiting satellites. A relatively low-powered jammer, transmitting static on the GPS frequency band, can overpower legitimate GPS signals over a wide area -- as much as a 100 kilometer circle at just 1 watt radiated power. (By comparison, typical general aviation Mode-C transponders radiate hundreds of watts.)

GPS receivers are so sensitive that there have even been cases of unintentional jamming. In one case no less than three separate jamming signals were being generated by VHF/UHF television antenna preamplifiers on boats in California's Monterey Bay. The signals from the preamplifiers were strong enough to completely jam GPS within a one-kilometer radius at sea level. The authors of the report speculate that a similar source, if transmitted using an omni-directional antenna, could interfere with aviation GPS receivers at a range of 50 kilometers.

Despite speculation in the press, military systems such as JDAM are designed to resist jamming. Among other things, they use directional antennas designed to see only the sky, and they have backup navigation capabilities so that they can continue to function even if they are jammed. Unfortunately, GA GPS systems are not jam-resistant, though IFR certified receivers do have one feature that can help: Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM), which is designed to raise a flag under conditions where you cannot trust the navigation data coming from the receiver. Jamming is one of several conditions that can cause a RAIM flag to be raised. VFR GPS receivers do not have RAIM -- but then, you're never supposed to use a VFR GPS as your only method of navigation.

How Much Risk?

How serious a risk does GPS jamming pose to GA pilots? Michael Braasch, an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Ohio University, and an avionics expert, says, "The fears about jamming are probably overblown -- the world may seem a little more unsafe than it was a few years ago, but inadvertent jamming is a problem, and GPS systems can malfunction. To be a prudent navigator you should be using all available means of navigation to cross-check your position. LORAN, RNAV, VOR/DME and looking out at the terrain periodically are all good options."

According to Braasch, the RAIM feature of IFR approach-approved GPS units should provide a warning if jamming or other problems cause the GPS position to become inaccurate: "RAIM is basically a form of fault detection. It looks at the ranges from all the satellites in view, and checks to see if they're consistent with each other. If one is inconsistent, it's ignored. You have to have at least four satellites to get a GPS location. To do fault detection, you need five, which will give you redundancy -- but won't give you fault isolation; for that you need at least six satellites." Braasch notes that jamming isn't the only situation that can cause RAIM to issue a warning: "The distribution of satellites in the sky determines whether you have enough redundancy to make RAIM work -- if you have two satellites in the same part of the sky, that's not as good as if they're well separated in both azimuth and elevation. That's why many of the more advanced IFR units, like Garmin's GNS430 & GNS530, have a RAIM prediction feature to tell you if an adequate number of satellites will be in view on a given flight plan."

The situation for VFR GPS receivers is more problematic, according to Braasch: "Sometimes a VFR GPS will give you a message about low signal strength, poor GPS coverage, or low accuracy, or too few satellites in view. If you drop below four satellites, a lot of VFR GPSs will drop into a 2-D position, where it assumes you're at constant altitude -- you're at reduced accuracy at that point, and as soon as you start descending or climbing, the position will be false. The catch is that a VFR GPS isn't required to issue any warning at all -- it may just continue to report an inaccurate position, so it's vital for the pilot to cross-check what the GPS says with other forms of navigation."

Plan Ahead

What can you do to protect yourself? IFR pilots should have a fallback plan in case of a GPS malfunction: Have an alternate airport with something other than a GPS approach, and an alternate flight plan using other navigation means (such as VOR-DME navigation along published airways) in case GPS becomes unavailable for direct-to navigation. VFR pilots should always cross-check their position using visual references on a sectional chart or ground-based navaids.

Braasch -- an instrument-rated pilot himself -- is appalled at the way some pilots have become GPS-dependant. "Just the whole business of situational awareness -- you get in a little trouble, and ATC asks where you are, and you have no idea -- you're 200 miles from some fix. With people filing direct-to, situational awareness is actually decreased. It's easy to get lulled into a sense of invulnerability. What if you have an emergency and the GPS 'Nearest Airport' function is not available?"

Incidentally, jamming is by no means the only event that can make a GPS receiver deliver incorrect data -- signals from the GPS satellites can be corrupted, too few satellites can be visible from certain positions to deliver an accurate position, and receivers can malfunction (which has happened to me, personally). Cross-checking what your GPS thinks your position is against a visual or electronic reference is always a good idea.

Facing prison for filming US police

But Graber, a sergeant with the Maryland Air National Guard, is now facing 16 years in prison, not for dangerous driving, but for a Youtube video he posted after receiving a speeding ticket.

The video, filmed with a camera mounted on Graber's motorcycle helmet designed to record biking stunts rather than police abuse, shows a plain clothes officer jumping out of an unmarked car and pointing a pistol at the motorcyclist.

It does not portray the policeman in a positive light.

Obama's US Assassination Program?

Sound too conspiratorial to be true? Like the cover-up ops of spy novels? Well, it's reality. And it is possibly the most bizarre, inhumane and abusive way that the White House is expanding its power over the American people.

And it's the gravest nightmare of U.S. citizens and abandonment of our Constitution to date: a presidential assassination program in which U.S. citizens are in the literal scopes of the executive branch based upon nothing more than allegations of terrorism involvement as the branch defines it.

It's not an extremist belief or theory of the far right. It's a fact that has been confirmed by The New York Times, The Washington Post and MSNBC and even documented by the far-left online magazine Salon.com.

Of course, the CIA has executed covert assassinations of foreigners for decades. But tragically, Obama is expanding this program to include American, non-Islamic, stateside, homegrown terrorists.

It all started in January, when The Washington Post reported: "As part of the operations, Obama approved a Dec. 24 strike against a (Yemeni) compound where a U.S. citizen, Anwar al-Aulaqi, was thought to be meeting with other regional al-Qaeda leaders. Although he was not the focus of the strike and was not killed, he has since been added to a shortlist of U.S. citizens specifically targeted for killing or capture."

"A shortlist of U.S. citizens specifically targeted for killing"?

That's right. No arrest. No Miranda rights. No due process. No trial. Just a bullet.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Thinking Americans have to ask themselves the following, sobering, question; at what point does a person who never advocates violence, but has legitimate, reasoned concerns about the US's foreign or domestic policies, morph into an alleged "terrorist", eligible for either imprisonment, or extrajudicial assassination, or both?!?

Obama targeted killings lawsuit spotlights American civilians

"An extrajudicial killing policy under which names are added to CIA and military 'kill lists' through a secret executive process and stay there for months at a time is plainly not limited to imminent threats." - Center for Constitutional Rights

Targets on Obama's high-tech kill-list in the "war on terror" hope that the American Civil Liberties Union and Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) lawsuit challenging government's asserted authority for "targeted killings” of U.S. citizens far from armed conflict zones will shed light directly on them, innocent American Targeted Individuals (TIs) and TIs in other countries, each struggling to survive the covert operation already operational. There is widespread belief that already, voiceless, faceless targets are dying or have been covertly killed according to TI support group communications.

"That the government adds people to kill lists after a bureaucratic process and leaves them on the lists for months at a time flies in the face of the Constitution and international law," stated Vince Warren, Executive Director of CCR. (CCR, Rights Groups File Challenge To Targeted Killing By U.S., Sept. 1, 2010)

Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU said, “A program that authorizes killing U.S. citizens, without judicial oversight, due process or disclosed standards is unconstitutional, unlawful and un-American.”

Lawsuit Challenges Govt’s Right to Assassinate US Citizens

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) filed a lawsuit today challenging the right of the Obama Administration to assassinate American citizens outside of any current war zones.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That such a lawsuit is necessary proves the United States has failed as a nation.

Government Think Tank Calls For Infiltrating Conspiracy Websites

Common Purpose marxist front group Demos says state needs to “fight back” against people who question the authorities to “increase trust in government”

Furious that state involvement in major terror attacks is being exposed to a wider audience than ever before via the Internet, a UK think tank closely affiliated with the Downing Street has called for authorities to infiltrate conspiracy websites in an effort to “increase trust in the government”.

“A Demos report published today, The Power of Unreason, argues that secrecy surrounding the investigation of events such as the 9/11 New York attacks and the 7/7 bombings in London merely adds weight to unsubstantiated claims that they were “inside jobs,” reports the London Independent.

The Ray Gun

US army heat-ray gun in Afghanistan

A newly-developed heat-ray gun that burns the skin but doesn't cause permanent injury is now with US troops in Afghanistan.
The Active Denial System (ADS) is a non-lethal weapon designed to disperse violent crowds and repel enemies.
Lt. Col. John Dorrian, a US military spokesperson, says the kit is now in Afghanistan but no decision has yet been made on its use.
There's been much talk about the need to keep civilian casualties in Afghanistan to a minimum. The heat-ray gun could help.
Research is continuing to make the system smaller, lighter and less expensive, says the Pentagon's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"There's been much talk about the need to keep civilian casualties in Afghanistan to a minimum. The heat-ray gun could help."
Why, what a wonderful device this pain ray is: it could even prevent civilian deaths!
Wouldn't you just love to have one of these units used on you as you participated in a peaceful protest, because it "might prevent civilian deaths"?!?
Look for one of these devices coming to a city near you in the not too distant future, particularly if you happen to live in a densely packed urban environment.

Veterans’ group: CIA blocking lawsuit over experiments on troops

An advocacy group working on behalf of Vietnam veterans has asked a federal judge in California to sanction the CIA, saying the spy agency has been blocking efforts to uncover its role in alleged experiments on US soldiers from the 1950s to 1970s.

The Vietnam Veterans of America filed a lawsuit on behalf of six Vietnam War veterans in January, 2009, claiming that the CIA had used an estimated 7,800 US service members as "guinea pigs" in experiments involving "at least 250, but as many as 400 chemical and biological agents," according to Courthouse News.

Among the chemicals the lawsuit alleges were used on the soldiers were LSD, sarin and phosgene nerve gases, cyanide, PCP and even THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

The lawsuit described it as a "vast program of human experimentation" that was "shrouded in secrecy" and carried out without the informed consent of the experiment subjects.

"In 1970, [the CIA] provided Congress with an alphabetical list showing that they had tested 145 drugs during Projects Bluebird, Artichoke, MKULTRA and MKDELTA," the lawsuit stated, as quoted at Courthouse News.

A 2003 report (PDF) from the Department of Veterans Affairs states that "between 1950 and 1975, about 6,720 soldiers took part in experiments involving exposures to 254 different chemicals, conducted at US Army Laboratories at Edgewood Arsenal, MD. Congressional hearings into these experiments in 1974 and 1975 resulted in disclosures, notification of subjects as to the nature of their chemical exposures, and ultimately to compensation for a few families of subjects who had died during the experiments."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unflipping believable.

This lawsuit should go forward, these documents should be released, and every single Vet who had these experiments done to them without their consent should be compensated, and well, period, end of discussion.

Study shows Alberta oilsands releasing heavy metals at levels toxic to fish

By Bob Weber, The Canadian Press

EDMONTON - A new study shows that heavy metals including lead and mercury which are being released from oilsands facilities into the air and water of northern Alberta are already above levels considered hazardous to fish.

The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, takes aim at the province's environmental monitoring and dismisses government claims that the contaminants come from natural sources.

"Contrary to claims made by industry and government in the popular press, the oilsands industry substantially increases the loadings of toxic (priority pollutants) into the Athabasca River and its tributaries via air and water pathways," concludes the report.
